Neurospora crassa, commonly referred to as red bread mold, is a genus of ascomycete fungi. While it is primarily recognized as a fundamental model organism in molecular biology, it remains a significant agricultural concern due to its role as a saprophytic pathogen that can contaminate stored grain and weaken crop tissues under high-moisture conditions.

The fungus predominantly affects cereal crops, including maize, wheat, and sorghum. It is most frequently encountered in grain storage facilities, where it thrives on seeds that have not been properly dried. In field conditions, Neurospora crassa exploits dead or decaying organic matter, though it may opportunistically invade tissues stressed by previous environmental or mechanical damage.

The primary symptom of infestation is the rapid appearance of an orange or salmon-colored powdery bloom, which consists of massive quantities of conidia. As the mycelium penetrates the substrate, it breaks down cellular structures, resulting in discoloration, a distinct musty odor, and a significant reduction in the seed quality, rendering the grain unsuitable for processing or animal feed.

Environmental conditions conducive to the development of this pathogen include high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. The spores are extremely buoyant and easily dispersed by air currents, allowing the fungus to spread rapidly throughout storage silos. Its ability to produce massive amounts of inoculum in short cycles makes it a persistent challenge in humid climates.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Maintaining grain moisture levels consistently below 14% to prevent fungal germination.
  • Implementing rigorous ventilation systems in silos to avoid localized moisture build-up.
  • Applying preventive sanitation measures, including the disinfection of storage bins.
  • Ensuring proper field hygiene by removing plant debris that serves as an inoculum reservoir.
