Ochrophyta is a diverse group of organisms that, while mostly aquatic, includes several species capable of acting as phytopathogens. In agricultural settings, these organisms can colonize the aerial parts of plants, causing significant stress and interfering with essential physiological processes like photosynthesis and respiration.

These pathogens are classified as parasitic algae that exploit surface moisture to colonize leaves, stems, and fruits. The disease spreads primarily through spores that are dispersed by wind or splashing water, leading to rapid contamination of neighboring plants in high-humidity environments such as greenhouses or tropical orchards.

The host range is broad, affecting various commercial crops such as citrus trees, tea plantations, and ornamental plants. The infestation is particularly damaging to perennial crops, as the algae can persist on branches and leaves throughout the growing season, weakening the plant's overall vigor and yield potential.

Symptoms often present as discolored spots, velvety patches, or crust-like growths on the leaf surface. These infestations block sunlight, leading to chlorosis and eventual necrosis of the infected tissue. In severe cases, the plant may experience premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a reduction in fruit quality or quantity.
