Okra yellow vein mosaic (OYVM) is a devastating viral disease caused by the Okra yellow vein mosaic virus (OYVMV). It is one of the most destructive diseases affecting okra crops globally, particularly in tropical regions where the environmental conditions favor both the host plant and the vector.

The virus is strictly transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. When whiteflies feed on infected tissues, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions. The spread is highly dependent on the population density of the vector and the proximity of alternative host plants that serve as virus reservoirs.

The primary symptom is a conspicuous yellowing of the leaf veins, which creates a mosaic-like pattern. As the disease progresses, the chlorosis spreads across the entire lamina, and the plants show severe stunting. Infected plants produce deformed, yellowish, and stunted fruits, significantly reducing both the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Management of the disease relies heavily on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Since there is no curative treatment for viral infections, the focus must be on vector control and the use of resistant germplasm. Maintaining a clean field environment by removing reservoir hosts is critical to breaking the disease cycle.

  • Cultivation of resistant or tolerant okra varieties.
  • Systemic insecticide application to suppress whitefly populations.
  • Removal and immediate destruction of symptomatic plants.

Successful management requires a collaborative approach including regional monitoring, proper chemical timing, and strict adherence to sanitary practices throughout the growing season.
