Onygenales is an order of fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division, known primarily for their role in breaking down complex organic substrates. In an agricultural context, certain members of this order are recognized as opportunistic pathogens that can negatively impact crop health by affecting root systems and stored seeds.

These pathogens primarily target a variety of plant tissues, particularly those in contact with soil. Crops such as small grains, vegetables, and tubers are susceptible to infection if soil health is compromised. The fungus targets the subterranean parts of the plant, disrupting the uptake of water and vital minerals.

Symptoms of infestation often include necrotic lesions on roots, stunted development of the primary root system, and, in advanced stages, the wilting of the plant above ground. Furthermore, implementing proper crop rotation, enhancing soil drainage, and applying biological amendments such as beneficial bacteria and fungi can significantly reduce the pressure of pathogenic Onygenales in the field.
