The Otideaceae family belongs to the Pezizales order, representing a group of ascomycetes primarily known for their saprotrophic lifestyle within forest ecosystems. While they are often viewed as decomposers, in specific agricultural or nursery settings, they can interact negatively with the root systems of various plant species, leading to physiological stress and reduced vigor.

The pathogen involved typically originates from spores that colonize moist, humus-rich substrates. These fungi operate by developing extensive mycelial networks that can interfere with the normal nutrient uptake of plants. The type of interaction is often facultative, becoming parasitic when the plant's natural defenses are compromised due to environmental stressors or soil imbalances.

Host plants commonly affected include woody ornamentals, seedling stocks, and trees thriving in shaded, high-moisture environments. While rarely causing total plant death, their presence often indicates underlying issues in soil health, such as poor aeration or an excess of undecomposed organic matter that fosters fungal proliferation.
