Description

The causative agent of this disease is the soil micromycete Paecilomyces vulpinum, which belongs to the group of imperfect fungi. This pathogenic microorganism acts primarily as a saprotroph, but under specific environmental conditions, it can adopt a parasitic lifestyle, attacking the root system and the crown of various cultivated plants.

This pathogen is most commonly found in vegetable, industrial, and cereal crops grown in both greenhouses and open fields. The fungus causes the most significant damage to root crops, seedlings, and plants during the active vegetative growth phase, particularly in high-density plantings and where crop rotation practices are neglected.

Symptoms of the infection include the gradual wilting of the above-ground part of the plant, followed by yellowing and drying of the lower leaves. A detailed examination of the root system reveals a characteristic greyish or reddish coating, accompanied by tissue rot and the degradation of the vascular system, which ultimately leads to plant death.

The development of the disease is triggered by high soil moisture, waterlogging, and poor soil aeration. Paecilomyces vulpinum actively spreads through contaminated substrates, farming tools, or infected plant debris. A temperature range between 20–25 degrees Celsius is considered optimal for rapid mycelial growth and sporulation.

The harmfulness of this fungus lies in the reduction of crop yields, the loss of market quality of agricultural produce, and the potential for total crop failure. To ensure effective crop protection, complex measures are recommended:

  • Strict adherence to crop rotation cycles, avoiding the return of susceptible crops to the same soil for at least 3-4 years.
  • Regular disinfection of soil and greenhouse equipment using specialized fungicides.
  • Management of soil moisture levels and ensuring proper drainage of planting areas.
  • Use of healthy planting material and the application of biological control agents, such as Trichoderma-based products.
