Description

The plant disease or, more accurately, the entomopathogenic condition caused by fungi of the genus Pandora (most notably Pandora neoaphidis), is a specific type of entomophthoramycosis. Unlike phytopathogens that attack plant tissues directly, this fungus is a specialized pathogen of insect pests, particularly aphids, making it a critical biological regulator of pest populations in agroecosystems.

The pathogen belongs to the order Entomophthorales. The life cycle of the fungus is intrinsically linked to its insect hosts. Fungal spores attach to the insect's cuticle, germinate into the body cavity, and cause the death of the pest, after which a conidial layer forms on the surface of the cadaver, ensuring further spread of the infection through the air.

The main crops where Pandora activity is observed include any plants prone to mass colonization by aphids: cereals, vegetables, fruit and berry crops, and industrial crops. The fungus does not damage the plant tissue itself; however, its presence indicates an active natural process of suppressing pest populations.

The development and spread of the pathogen are directly dependent on microclimatic conditions. High relative humidity (over 80%) and moderate temperatures are critical factors for mass spore germination and infection of aphid colonies. During dry periods, the activity of the fungus drops sharply, which can lead to outbreaks of pest populations.

There is no economic damage to crops caused by the Pandora fungus; on the contrary, it provides significant benefits. As a biological agent, it is capable of naturally reducing aphid populations by 70–90% under favorable conditions. Management strategies are focused not on controlling the fungus, but on maintaining conditions favorable for its life cycle by avoiding excessive use of broad-spectrum fungicides.
