Parmelia is a genus of foliose lichens that often colonizes the bark of trees. In agronomy, it is not considered a primary pathogen, but rather an indicator of a tree's declining health or poor environmental conditions. While it does not feed on the tree's sap, its presence on the trunk can significantly affect the overall vitality and biological health of the plant.
This organism commonly affects a wide range of woody species, including fruit trees like apples, pears, and stone fruits. It thrives best on mature specimens with rough, cracked bark, which provide a stable surface for the lichen to attach its thallus. Young trees with smooth, rapidly expanding bark are rarely colonized by Parmelia.
The visual symptoms involve the appearance of grey, green, or brownish leafy-like structures covering the surface of branches and trunks. As the lichen spreads, it forms a dense crust that restricts the natural gas exchange of the tree's bark tissues. This barrier often promotes excessive humidity, creating a micro-environment that encourages rot and insect infestations.
Developmental factors for Parmelia include high ambient humidity, lack of sunlight due to dense canopy, and poor circulation of air. It is most frequently found in neglected orchards where pruning and regular maintenance are absent. Because it acts as a shelter for various dormant pests and harmful fungal spores, it indirectly causes significant damage to the host plant.
Management strategies focus on physical removal and environmental improvement. Gardeners should scrape off the lichen using specialized tools during the dormant season, followed by the application of horticultural lime wash or copper-based treatments. Improving orchard hygiene through regular pruning is essential to allow light and air to dry out the bark, effectively preventing the recurrence of this lichen.
