Peach tree short life (PTSL) is a complex disorder that results in the sudden decline and death of peach trees, typically between three and eight years of age. This condition is a significant challenge for growers globally, causing extensive losses and shortening the economic lifespan of commercial orchards significantly.

The etiology of the disease involves a complex of biotic and abiotic factors. The primary biological contributors are ring nematodes, Criconemoides xenoplax, and the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. While the disease primarily affects peach trees, it is fundamentally a physiological weakness triggered by environmental factors, particularly winter cold stress and soil chemistry imbalances.

Symptoms usually become apparent in early spring, shortly after leaf emergence. Trees may exhibit sudden wilting, curling of leaves, and dieback of branches. Inspection of the trunk near the soil line often reveals necrotic tissue, sunken bark, and a sour odor emanating from the cambium, which turns a characteristic reddish-brown color as the infection progresses.

The development of PTSL is heavily dependent on the interaction between environmental conditions and the plant's health. Nematode damage weakens the root system, making the tree more susceptible to bacterial infection through microscopic wounds. When winter temperatures fluctuate drastically, trees that have not properly hardened off become highly susceptible to trunk injury, which serves as a site for the development of bacterial cankers.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that focuses on prevention rather than cure. Since the disease is nearly impossible to treat once established, growers should focus on the following protective measures:

  • Site selection: avoid areas with high populations of ring nematodes and previous history of stone fruit orchards.
  • Soil management: maintain proper soil pH and minimize weed pressure in the orchard.
  • Cultural practices: avoid heavy pruning in late summer or fall, as this delays dormancy and increases cold sensitivity.
  • Use resistant rootstocks that are documented to tolerate or resist nematode colonization.
  • Soil fumigation prior to planting to significantly reduce nematode counts in the field.
