Description
Cytospora cincta belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Cytospora. It is a pathogenic ascomycete fungus that causes a destructive disease known as cytospora canker or perennial canker. This pathogen is particularly harmful to stone fruit species, including peaches, apricots, cherries, and plums, significantly reducing the lifespan and productivity of orchards worldwide.
The characteristic symptoms include the formation of sunken, discolored, and necrotic areas on the bark. As the infection progresses, the infected tissue becomes cracked, and small, flask-shaped reproductive structures called pycnidia appear. Under humid conditions, these pycnidia release masses of spores, which are spread by water splashes, wind, and pruning tools, creating new infection sites.
The disease cycle begins when spores enter the tree through open wounds, such as pruning cuts, winter frost cracks, or sites damaged by insects. Once inside, the mycelium colonizes the cambium and inner bark tissues, causing localized dieback. The fungus overwinters within the infected bark, remaining dormant until conditions become favorable for growth, allowing the pathogen to persist in the orchard year after year.
Environmental stress plays a critical role in the severity of Cytospora cincta. Trees suffering from drought, poor nutrition, or extreme temperature fluctuations are significantly more susceptible to colonization. The fungus thrives in moist environments, which facilitate spore production and germination. Without proper management, the cankers can eventually girdle branches or entire trunks, leading to tree death.
Effective control strategies require an integrated approach:
- Regular removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce inoculum.
- Proper sterilization of pruning equipment between trees.
- Application of protective coatings to pruning wounds.
- Optimization of orchard hygiene and tree vigor through balanced fertilization.
- Preventive fungicide applications to protect susceptible tissues during vulnerable growth stages.
