Pelargonium ring pattern is a viral disease caused primarily by the Tomato ringspot virus (ToRSV). It disrupts the physiological processes of the host plant, leading to stunted growth and permanent aesthetic damage, which poses a significant threat to greenhouse production and home gardening.

This pathogen specifically affects various species within the Pelargonium genus, including common geraniums, scented-leaf pelargoniums, and ivy-leaf pelargoniums (Pelargonium peltatum). Once infected, a plant remains a reservoir of the virus, potentially spreading it to healthy neighboring plants through various vectors.

Symptomatology is characterized by the appearance of chlorotic rings, spots, or line patterns on the leaves. As the infection progresses, affected leaves may show necrosis, distortion, or crinkling. The impact on the plant's health is severe, often resulting in reduced flowering, poor root system development, and overall loss of plant vigor.

Transmission occurs through several pathways, including soil-borne nematodes like Xiphinema americanum, which act as vectors. Additionally, the virus is easily transmitted mechanically through pruning shears, knives, or other handling tools contaminated with the sap of an infected plant if proper hygiene protocols are ignored.

Management of the Pelargonium ring pattern is strictly preventive, as there is no chemical cure for systemic viral infections. Control strategies include immediate rogueing of infected plants, systematic sterilization of tools using disinfectants, and implementing strict sanitation practices to control nematode populations and avoid mechanical transmission.
