Pelargonium ring pattern virus

Pelargonium ring

Description

Pelargonium ring pattern virus (PRPV) is a plant pathogen classified within the Pelarspovirus genus. It primarily affects plants of the Pelargonium genus, causing systemic infection. As a virus, it relies entirely on its host cell machinery for replication and survival, spreading throughout the entire vascular system of the plant.

The disease is characterized by the formation of chlorotic rings, concentric lines, and spots on the leaves of the affected plants. These symptoms are often the most visible manifestation of the virus. In some cases, environmental factors such as temperature can lead to symptom masking, making it difficult to distinguish an infected plant from a healthy one by sight alone.

The biology of PRPV is dominated by vegetative transmission. The most significant factor in its spread is the distribution of infected cuttings. Because the virus is systemic, every piece of an infected plant contains the pathogen. Furthermore, mechanical transmission via contaminated cutting tools during pruning or propagation is a major pathway for spreading the virus throughout a collection.

Development and spread of the virus are facilitated by intensive agricultural practices where plants are crowded and handled frequently. Once an individual plant is infected, it remains a permanent reservoir for the virus. While the virus does not typically kill the plant, it significantly lowers its vigor, flowering capacity, and overall commercial value.

  • Sanitize cutting tools with appropriate disinfectants after every plant.
  • Source planting material only from reputable, virus-indexed suppliers.
  • Routinely inspect all plants for the classic ring-pattern symptoms.
  • Remove and destroy any plants suspected of being infected to prevent spread.
  • Implement strict hygiene protocols for staff and visitors in greenhouses.

There are no chemical pesticides or fungicides capable of eradicating a virus from an infected plant. Therefore, disease control relies entirely on exclusion, sanitation, and the use of healthy, virus-tested planting stocks. Management strategies should prioritize preventing the introduction of the pathogen into clean production areas.
