The fungus has a broad host range, primarily infecting stored grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. It thrives on substrates rich in carbohydrates and is frequently associated with the spoilage of products that have been improperly handled, leading to significant economic losses in the agricultural sector.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the emergence of a velvety or dusty mycelial mat, which typically transitions from white to a blue-green color. Infected parts of the fruit or grain tissue begin to rot and soften, often emitting a distinct musty, moldy odor as the pathogen secretes extracellular enzymes.

Environmental factors such as high humidity (above 75-80%) and optimal temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C are critical for the proliferation of Penicillium corylophilum. Furthermore, the presence of physical injuries or bruises on the crop surfaces serves as a primary entry point for fungal spores to colonize the interior tissue.

Effective management and prevention strategies include rigorous control of storage conditions, such as maintaining low humidity and proper aeration. Producers should focus on minimizing physical damage during harvest, performing sanitation of storage facilities, and utilizing appropriate antifungal treatments to ensure long-term shelf stability.
