Description
The causative agent of the disease known as Penicillium rot is the fungus Penicillium roquefortii. In agronomic terms, this pathogen is recognized as a significant threat to stored agricultural produce, causing rapid decay and economic losses through the colonization of various fruits, vegetables, and grain crops.
The disease primarily affects crops such as potatoes, carrots, onions, and various root vegetables. The fungus typically enters plant tissues through wounds, cuts, or bruises sustained during the harvesting process or through inadequate handling during transportation to storage facilities.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of a dense, felt-like mold growth on the surface of the produce. Initially appearing white, the colony eventually turns into a characteristic blue-green or bluish-grey shade as spores are produced. The infected tissue beneath the growth becomes soft, watery, and develops a distinct musty odor, leading to total decomposition.
The development of this fungal disease is heavily favored by high relative humidity levels, usually exceeding 85%, and poor ventilation within storage areas. While the optimal temperature for mycelial growth is between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius, the spores of Penicillium roquefortii are highly resilient and capable of surviving and spreading under a wide range of environmental conditions.
Managing Penicillium rot requires a comprehensive post-harvest strategy. Producers should focus on minimizing mechanical damage during harvest, ensuring thorough sanitation of storage buildings, and maintaining precise control over temperature and ventilation parameters. Effective management also involves the timely removal of infected items to prevent the spread of airborne spores throughout the storage facility.
