Description
Penicillium spinulosum is a microscopic fungus within the Penicillium genus known for causing plant decay and storage rot. It manifests primarily as a greenish, powdery mold on seeds, fruits, and vegetables. While it acts as a saprophyte in natural ecosystems, it becomes an aggressive opportunistic pathogen under stressed conditions or improper storage environments.
This pathogen targets a wide array of agricultural crops, including cereals, potatoes, and various pomology species. It predominantly affects tissues that have sustained mechanical damage during harvesting or transit. In seeds, the fungus interferes with germination and can lead to seedling blight, as it produces toxic metabolites that inhibit plant growth.
Symptoms of the infection typically begin with the appearance of small patches of fungal mycelium, which later transform into dense, green, or blue-green sporulating mats. As the infection progresses, the tissues beneath the fungal growth decompose rapidly, resulting in soft rot accompanied by a sharp, musty odor. This damage renders the infected produce entirely unsalable and unsuitable for processing.
The development and spread of Penicillium spinulosum are driven by environmental factors, particularly relative humidity levels exceeding 80% and poor ventilation. The spores are highly resilient and can remain dormant in soil or on the surfaces of storage crates and warehouse walls for extended periods, waiting for conducive conditions, such as temperature fluctuations or increased moisture, to activate.
Effective management requires an integrated approach starting with rigorous sanitation of storage facilities and the use of certified, treated seeds. Preventive measures must prioritize the reduction of mechanical injuries during harvest and the maintenance of controlled atmospheres in storage units. Fungicidal seed treatments are essential to create a protective barrier against soil-borne inoculum during the early stages of plant development.
