Description

Scabiosa downy mildew is a plant disease caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora constantinescui. This obligate parasite specifically targets plants within the Scabiosa genus, leading to systemic infection and significant loss of aesthetic value in ornamental cultivars.

The host range is primarily limited to various species of Scabiosa. Because the pathogen is highly specialized, it can quickly establish itself in gardens and greenhouses where these flowers are grown in monocultures, leading to rapid disease transmission between adjacent plants.

Symptoms initially appear as chlorotic or pale yellow spots on the upper leaf surfaces. As the disease progresses, these spots often turn necrotic or brown. A critical diagnostic feature is the presence of a delicate, grayish-purple mycelial growth or fuzzy sporulation on the underside of the leaves, which is visible under high magnification or in humid conditions.

The development of Peronospora constantinescui is strongly favored by environmental conditions characterized by cool temperatures (15–20°C) and high humidity levels. Leaf wetness duration is a crucial factor for spore germination and infection, making rainy weather and poor airflow the primary drivers of epidemics.

Control measures rely heavily on integrated disease management. Gardeners should implement strict sanitation by removing and disposing of infected plant material. Improving ventilation, spacing plants appropriately to reduce humidity, and avoiding overhead irrigation are essential preventative practices. When chemical intervention is necessary, fungicides effective against oomycetes, including metalaxyl or copper-based compounds, are recommended.
