Downy mildew of raspberry

Downy mildew of raspberry, caused by the oomycete Peronospora rubi, is a severe fungal disease that affects various species within the Rubus genus. Unlike true powdery mildew, this pathogen thrives in cool, moist environments and can rapidly devastate a plantation if left unmanaged. It acts as an obligate parasite, extracting nutrients from the host plant's cells, which significantly weakens the plant's physiological structure.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are red and black raspberries, as well as blackberries. The disease targets leaves, stems, and fruits during the active growing season. If the infection reaches the fruit-bearing shoots, it can lead to stunted growth, flower abortion, and a dramatic decrease in fruit quality and yield potential for both current and future seasons.

The characteristic symptoms begin as yellowish or reddish-brown irregular spots on the upper leaf surface. The key diagnostic feature, visible on the underside of the leaves, is the development of a white to grayish-purple fungal fuzz, which consists of sporangiophores. In severe cases, the foliage becomes necrotic, curls, and drops prematurely, leaving the stems exposed and susceptible to further environmental stress.

Environmental factors play a decisive role in the disease's lifecycle. High humidity, heavy morning dews, and cool temperatures are perfect for spore germination and rapid spread. The pathogen often survives the winter in infected canes or debris, making the beginning of the new season the most dangerous time for new infections to establish themselves.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Regular sanitation by removing and burning symptomatic canes.
• Promoting airflow through proper pruning and row spacing.
• Applying preventive fungicide treatments, particularly during wet spring weather.
• Prioritizing disease-resistant cultivars in new planting projects.
• Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry for as long as possible.
