Pezizella is a fungal disease affecting various plant species, caused by Ascomycete fungi within the genus Pezizella. While many species in this genus function as saprotrophs on decaying organic matter, several can act as opportunistic pathogens under stressed plant conditions or high humidity, leading to tissue necrosis and decay.
This pathogen commonly attacks woody stems, twigs, and succulent fruits across a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops. It is particularly noted for causing localized lesions that eventually compromise the structural integrity of the affected plant organ, impacting overall growth and yield.
Symptoms are typically characterized by the emergence of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, which appear on the surface of infected tissues. These structures often display a pale white or yellowish hue. Over time, the surrounding tissue becomes discolored, necrotic, and soft, leading to dieback or fruit rot.
The spread and development of the disease are heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high moisture levels and stagnant air. The fungus overwinters on debris and spreads via wind-borne or water-splashed spores, especially during damp, cool, and overcast weather conditions that provide optimal germination environments.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Key strategies include:
- Regular removal and destruction of infected plant material to reduce inoculum levels.
- Ensuring proper spacing and pruning to facilitate airflow and reduce surface moisture.
- Application of systemic and contact fungicides as a preventative measure.
