Description

Pezizomycotina is the largest subphylum of the Ascomycota, comprising a vast majority of fungal species that cause severe plant diseases. This group includes well-known pathogens such as Sclerotinia, powdery mildew fungi, and numerous leaf spot pathogens that pose a significant threat to global agriculture.

The diseases caused by these fungi are classified as mycoses. Pathogens typically affect all parts of the plant, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Infection often occurs through natural openings like stomata, mechanical injuries, or through the direct enzymatic degradation of plant cell walls.

The host range for Pezizomycotina is extremely broad, affecting cereals, legumes, fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Many of these fungi persist in the soil as sclerotia, surviving for several years, which makes crop rotation a challenging but essential part of their management.

Symptoms of infection are diverse, typically presenting as chlorosis, necrosis, root or crown rot, and the development of visible fungal structures such as mycelial mats or apothecia. Infected plants often lose turgor, wilt, and may eventually die, leading to substantial yield losses across various agricultural sectors.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures create optimal surroundings for the rapid spread of these pathogens. Effective control strategies involve an integrated approach:

  • Application of targeted fungicides.
  • Crop rotation to break the pathogen lifecycle.
  • Sanitation by removing infected plant debris.
  • Use of certified disease-resistant crop cultivars.
  • Seed treatment prior to planting.
