Phacus is a genus of unicellular euglenoid flagellates typically found in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater bodies. While not a plant disease pathogen, it is a significant biological factor in agricultural water management. The presence of large populations of Phacus often indicates high levels of dissolved nutrients, commonly resulting from fertilizer runoff.

These organisms do not infect crops directly, but they interfere with irrigation infrastructure. In agricultural contexts, they are primarily identified as part of the phytoplankton community that contributes to the phenomenon known as water blooming, which can physically compromise irrigation supply systems.

The main symptoms of Phacus proliferation include a distinct green or olive-green coloration of water in irrigation ponds. Under high light intensity, they form surface films that significantly alter the transparency and oxygen concentration of the water, potentially affecting the overall stability of the irrigation source.

Development conditions for Phacus are linked to water temperature and nutrient loading. They thrive in warm water (20–28°C) that is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. Runoff from nearby fields, which carries residual fertilizers, acts as a primary catalyst for rapid population growth in drainage ditches and storage reservoirs.

The economic impact is manifested through the clogging of filtration systems, drip emitters, and nozzles, leading to increased maintenance costs and potential crop stress due to insufficient water delivery. Preventive measures include regular water analysis, implementing buffer strips to reduce nutrient runoff, and using advanced mechanical or chemical filtration technologies to clear the water before irrigation.
