Description

Phaeolus (genus Phaeolus) refers to a group of fungi, most notably Phaeolus schweinitzii, which is responsible for causing brown cubical rot in the roots and butt logs of various conifer species. This pathogen is a necrotrophic fungus that essentially digests the cellulose of the wood, leading to structural instability in standing timber.

The primary hosts for this fungus are coniferous trees, specifically pine, spruce, larch, and fir. While it can occur in various environments, it is most common in older or stressed stands. The infection is particularly problematic because it often remains hidden within the root system for several years before external signs appear.

Symptoms of infection include thinning or discolored foliage, reduced annual growth, and the development of large, yellowish-brown, velvety fruiting bodies at the base of the tree. The internal wood affected by the fungus turns dark brown and eventually breaks into small, brittle cubes. This decay significantly weakens the tree's ability to remain upright.

Development and spread of the fungus are favored by moist soil conditions and the presence of stumps, which serve as long-term inoculum sources. The disease spreads either through the air via basidiospores or through root-to-root contact in stands where trees are densely planted. Once a tree is infected, the mycelium can persist in the soil and infect adjacent trees.

The economic impact of Phaeolus is substantial, as it leads to timber loss due to windthrow and the degradation of valuable wood in the lower trunk. Management and prevention strategies include:

  • Strict sanitation protocols, including the removal of infected trees and stumps.
  • Minimizing root and bark damage during logging operations.
  • Promoting diverse forest stands to reduce the speed of horizontal spread.
  • Regular inspections of vulnerable stands during the fruiting season.
