Phaeothamniales is an order of golden-brown algae that can negatively affect plant cultivation, particularly in systems with high moisture and nutrient concentration. In agricultural practice, these organisms are often considered environmental stressors that hinder the health and productivity of sensitive cultivars.
These algae frequently colonize surfaces in hydroponic setups, greenhouses, and fields with poor drainage. Crops like lettuce, herbs, and ornamental seedlings are particularly susceptible as the algae can form mats around the root systems or stem bases, creating a physical barrier to normal plant development.
The primary symptoms include the formation of brownish, slippery films on the soil surface, pot edges, or lower parts of stems. As the algae proliferate, they compete with plants for essential nutrients and light, causing the plants to exhibit signs of nutrient deficiency, stunting, and reduced vigor.
The development of Phaeothamniales is primarily driven by excessive soil moisture, high humidity, and high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. These conditions, combined with sufficient light exposure, facilitate rapid colonization of the growing environment, creating a hostile microclimate for the host plants.
The economic harm caused by these organisms is mainly through yield reduction and increased susceptibility to secondary pathogenic infections. Effective control requires:

- Improving airflow and humidity control within greenhouse environments.
- Applying suitable algicides or biological control agents when necessary.
- Maintaining strict sanitation protocols for all cultivation equipment and tools.
