Phaeothamnion confervicolum is a species of golden algae (Chrysophyceae) that can significantly impact the health of aquatic crops in controlled environments. As an epiphytic organism, it colonizes the surfaces of plants, often forming dense mats that interfere with vital biological processes.

This organism primarily targets plants grown in hydroponic systems, aquaponics, and aquaculture facilities. The presence of the algae on plant tissues physically obstructs photosynthesis and nutrient absorption, which is particularly detrimental to high-value leafy greens and ornamental aquatic plants.

Symptoms of infestation are characterized by the appearance of a yellowish-brown, slimy biofilm covering the submerged parts of the crop. Over time, the affected plants may show signs of stunted growth, leaf discolouration, and root rot, leading to a general decline in crop vigor and yield quality.
