Phlebiopsis gigantea is a corticioid fungus recognized globally in silviculture for its role as a biological control agent. Unlike typical plant pathogens, this fungus acts as a specialized saprotroph that effectively competes with and inhibits the growth of Heterobasidion annosum, the causative agent of root rot in coniferous forest stands.
The host range of this organism primarily includes coniferous tree species such as pines (Pinus) and spruces (Picea). It is most commonly found colonizing the fresh surfaces of stumps following logging operations. By establishing its mycelium rapidly in these nutrient-rich environments, it prevents the infestation of parasitic fungi that would otherwise spread to adjacent healthy trees.
Signs of colonization include the development of thin, leathery fruiting bodies on the bark or wood surface. These fruiting bodies are typically white, cream, or pale yellow and lack a distinct cap. In the early stages, the fungal mycelium may not be visible to the naked eye, but it quickly invades the sapwood of the stump, effectively sealing it off from other fungal pathogens.
