Description
Phoma leaf spot, caused by fungi of the genus Peyronellaea (formerly Phoma spp.), is a serious fungal disease affecting a wide range of agricultural crops. The pathogen is widespread globally and can cause significant economic losses by reducing both the quality and quantity of the harvest. It acts as a parasite that exploits the plant's vascular and structural tissues, often leading to necrosis and premature senescence.
The host range of this pathogen is extensive, including cereals like winter wheat, as well as oilseeds and legumes. In winter wheat crops, Phoma can infect seedlings and adult plants, often appearing alongside other foliar diseases. The impact on wheat is particularly severe during wet spring seasons, as the fungus thrives on foliage and weakens the plant before the grain-filling stage.
Symptoms of Phoma infection usually begin as small, discolored spots on leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, often developing a concentric pattern or a distinct border. The hallmark sign of the infection is the development of pycnidia—minute, dark, speck-like fruiting bodies embedded within the necrotic tissue. On stems, the disease can cause lesions that lead to lodging or stem breakage.
The development and spread of Peyronellaea are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Rain-splashed spores are the primary mode of transmission from infected plant debris to healthy tissue. The pathogen can survive for several seasons in the soil or on crop residue, making it a persistent threat in monoculture farming systems.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize disease pressure. Key strategies include the rotation of non-host crops to break the pathogen's life cycle and the removal of infected crop residues through deep tillage. Chemical control, involving the application of fungicides during the critical growth stages, is essential when environmental conditions favor disease outbreaks. Selecting resistant cultivars is a foundational component of long-term prevention.
