The genus Phycomyces consists of fast-growing zygomycete fungi often characterized by their long, dark sporangiophores. While they act primarily as saprotrophs feeding on decomposing organic matter, they are significant in agriculture as opportunistic pathogens that can severely degrade the quality of harvested crops stored in suboptimal conditions.
These fungi typically attack vegetables, fruits, and seeds that are physically damaged or physiologically weakened. By exploiting breaks in the outer skin of produce, the fungus penetrates the underlying tissues, utilizing stored nutrients for rapid growth. In a farming context, this results in significant economic losses during the post-harvest storage phase.
The primary symptom of a Phycomyces infection is the rapid appearance of a dense, fuzzy layer of mycelium that darkens as sporangia develop. The affected area quickly loses structural integrity, becoming soft and pulpy. As the infection progresses, the tissues often release fluids and develop a strong, musty odor that signals the advanced state of decomposition.
Environmental factors play a decisive role in the propagation of this fungus. High relative humidity (frequently exceeding 80%) combined with stagnant air creates an ideal microclimate for germination and proliferation. Because the spores are airborne, even a small, localized outbreak can rapidly infect an entire storage facility if the environmental controls are not maintained correctly.
Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and environmental control. It is critical to store only healthy, undamaged produce and to monitor temperature and humidity levels constantly. Regular disinfection of storage areas using approved agents, along with the installation of robust ventilation systems, remains the most effective way to prevent outbreaks of this fungal pathogen.
