Description
The disease caused by Phyllachora ischaemi is a common fungal infection primarily affecting various grass species. Classified as an ascomycete fungus, it colonizes the leaves of host plants, establishing a parasitic relationship that disrupts the plant's metabolic processes and reduces overall health.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are grasses, specifically those within the Ischaemum genus and related tribes within the Poaceae family. While often found in wild habitats, it can also impact pastures and meadow grasses, posing a challenge to forage productivity and quality if the infection becomes widespread.
Symptomatic manifestation includes the development of small, shiny, black spots or stroma on the leaf surface. These spots are often slightly raised and can be irregularly scattered or aggregated. Over time, the surrounding leaf tissue may show signs of chlorosis or necrosis, eventually leading to the blight of the entire leaf blade.
The proliferation of Phyllachora ischaemi is highly dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. The fungus overwinters on debris as hardened stroma, releasing ascospores during favorable conditions in the spring, which are then disseminated by wind and water splashes to infect new leaves.
Management strategies focus on reducing the primary inoculum source to prevent re-infection in subsequent seasons. Key practices include:
