Description

Phyllody is a severe plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized wall-less prokaryotes that inhabit the phloem of host plants. By interfering with the plant's metabolic and regulatory systems, these pathogens force the host to reallocate resources away from reproduction towards abnormal vegetative growth, causing systemic physiological disorders.

The host range of phytoplasmas responsible for phyllody is extensive, impacting both wild flora and major agronomic crops. Economically important plants such as safflower, chickpea, and cotton are particularly susceptible. These crops serve as primary targets, often suffering devastating yield losses when the pathogen is present in the environment.

The hallmark of the disease is the transformation of floral parts into green, leaf-like structures. This condition, known as floral phyllody, usually results in total sterility of the flowers. Additional symptoms include chlorosis, stunting, excessive proliferation of axillary buds, and the formation of a witches' broom effect, where many thin, weak stems emerge from a single point.

The transmission of the disease is almost exclusively dependent on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers (Cicadellidae). Once a vector acquires the phytoplasma while feeding on an infected plant, the pathogen multiplies within the insect's body. The insect then becomes a permanent carrier, spreading the disease to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.

Management of phyllody is challenging due to the lack of curative treatments for infected plants. Consequently, protective measures must be preventative and focused on the following actions:

  • Implementation of robust insecticidal programs to suppress vector populations.
  • Systematic removal of alternate weed hosts that serve as reservoirs.
  • Use of certified, pathogen-free seeds to prevent early-stage infection.
  • Strategic timing of planting to avoid peak activity of vector insects.
