Phyllosticta leaf spot, caused by the fungus Phyllosticta brassicae, is a common fungal disease affecting various species within the Brassicaceae family, such as cabbage, broccoli, and canola. It acts primarily as a foliar pathogen that compromises the structural and physiological integrity of host leaves.
The characteristic symptoms appear as circular to irregular spots on the leaves, usually light brown or greyish, enclosed by a dark, defined border. As the lesion matures, the fungus produces numerous small black structures known as pycnidia within the center of the necrotic tissue, which serve as the primary units for spore dispersal.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. The pathogen overwinters on crop debris, in the soil, and on infected seeds, meaning that long-term survival of the fungus is highly effective if sanitation protocols are neglected.
