Phymatotrichum root rot, widely known as Texas root rot, is a destructive soil-borne disease caused by the fungus Phymatotrichum omnivorum. This pathogen is notorious for its ability to attack the root systems of a vast array of dicotyledonous plants, leading to rapid vascular decay and plant death.

The host range of the fungus is exceptionally wide, comprising over 2,000 species of broadleaf plants. Economically, the most significant losses occur in cotton crops, alfalfa fields, stone fruit orchards, and various ornamental trees that are susceptible to root system degradation caused by this specific fungus.

Symptoms typically manifest as sudden wilting of the foliage during high-temperature periods. While the plants may appear to recover at night initially, they soon undergo permanent wilting. The leaves turn yellow to bronze and remain attached to the dead plant. Examination of the roots reveals extensive decay and, under magnification, characteristic strands of fungal mycelium.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on soil environment, favoring warm, alkaline soils. The fungus forms resilient sclerotia in the soil, which can persist for years, making the eradication of the pathogen an extremely difficult agronomic challenge. Transmission mainly occurs through root-to-root contact within the soil profile.

Management and prevention focus on long-term agricultural practices rather than curative chemical treatments. Key strategies include planting resistant monocot crops, such as corn or sorghum, in rotations, maintaining proper soil fertility, and employing deep tillage to disrupt root contact zones. Efforts to introduce suppressive soil microflora are also a subject of active research.
