Physarum braunianum is a species of myxomycete (slime mold) that occasionally appears in agricultural settings, affecting the surface health of various crops. While primarily saprotrophic, these organisms can act as transient pathogens, covering plant parts with their plasmodium and obstructing normal physiological functions, leading to reduced vigor and secondary decay.

The host range includes low-lying crops, leafy vegetables, and ornamental plants. The organism typically affects those parts of the plant in close proximity to the soil, such as lower leaves and stems, especially where the microenvironment is characterized by high humidity and limited sunlight exposure.

The visual signs of infestation are distinct: a gelatinous, slime-like coating forms on the tissue, which eventually develops into small, clustered brownish sporangia. As the plasmodium moves over the plant surface, it creates a layer that blocks stomata and prevents effective photosynthesis, often leaving behind localized discolored or chlorotic spots once the slime dries or relocates.

Development is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high moisture levels and stagnant air. The organism flourishes when temperatures range between 15°C and 25°C, coupled with high relative humidity. Dense canopy closure and poor soil drainage are the primary factors that facilitate the rapid colonization and spread of Physarum braunianum across a field or greenhouse.

Management and prevention strategies focus on modifying the microclimate to be less favorable for slime mold growth:

  • Increasing air circulation by proper spacing and pruning.
  • Utilizing mulch to prevent the leaves from touching damp soil.
  • Implementing efficient irrigation schedules to ensure the surface dries out quickly.
  • Sanitizing growing areas by removing decomposing plant debris.
  • Monitoring irrigation systems to prevent over-watering and moisture accumulation on lower foliage.
