Physarum polycephalum is a fascinating organism belonging to the class of Myxomycetes, often referred to as slime mold. While it is primarily a biological curiosity, in agricultural settings, it can behave as an opportunistic inhabitant that interferes with the healthy growth of crops, particularly in greenhouse conditions and plant nurseries.
The organism primarily affects seedlings, low-growing vegetables, and ornamental plants. It does not penetrate deep into the plant tissues like fungal pathogens but creates a dense, slimy layer on the exterior. This physical cover inhibits photosynthesis, restricts transpiration, and blocks stomata, which can lead to the overall weakening of the affected plant.
Symptoms of its presence are distinct: a bright yellow or orange amoeboid mass that moves across the substrate and stems. As the slime mold progresses into its reproductive phase, it forms sporangia, leaving behind a crusty, dry residue on the plant surface. Underneath this layer, tissues may show signs of chlorosis, yellowing, or decay due to secondary bacterial colonization.
The development of this slime mold is driven by high humidity, poor air circulation, and excess organic debris on the soil surface. It thrives in warm environments with stagnant moisture, often colonizing soil or containers that have been kept consistently wet without proper drying intervals, which is common in high-density greenhouse production.
Management and prevention require strict adherence to hygiene standards. Improving drainage, reducing irrigation frequency, and ensuring robust ventilation are the primary defenses. Physical removal of the slime mass is necessary, followed by cleaning with mild disinfectants. In severe cases, preventive use of broad-spectrum fungicides may be required to protect the weakened plant tissue from subsequent fungal infections.
