Description
Physconia grisea is a species of foliose lichen that commonly colonizes the bark of various deciduous trees. While it is not a parasitic disease that directly feeds on the host plant, it is often considered an aesthetic and sometimes physiological nuisance in horticulture, as it indicates a tree's reduced vitality or an environment conducive to excess moisture.
This lichen is frequently observed on older, slow-growing fruit trees such as apples, pears, and plums, as well as various urban trees like poplars and ashes. It typically establishes itself on bark surfaces that provide stable moisture levels and are not subjected to constant friction or extreme environmental stress.
The symptoms of colonization include the appearance of gray to brownish-gray, leaf-like structures (thalli) that adhere tightly to the bark. The lobes of the lichen are often adorned with granular soralia, giving them a dusty or whitish appearance. In mature colonies, the lichen can cover significant portions of the trunk and branches.
The development of Physconia grisea is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as humidity, air pollution levels, and light exposure. Orchards with poorly managed canopies that lack sunlight and adequate ventilation are much more prone to colonization, as the lichen thrives in the microclimate created by dense, overgrown foliage.
While the lichen itself does not kill the tree, it provides a habitat for overwintering pests and can trap moisture against the bark, leading to potential decay or fungal vulnerability. To manage and prevent its spread, arborists recommend regular pruning to improve airflow, mechanical brushing of the bark with non-metallic tools, and maintaining tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management.
