Phytomonas is a genus of parasitic protozoa (Trypanosomatida) that infects a wide variety of plant species. Unlike typical plant pathogens such as fungi or bacteria, these flagellates reside and multiply within the phloem and lactiferous vessels of the host plant, effectively disrupting the transport of nutrients and sugars throughout the plant system.

This pathogen significantly affects several economically important crops, including coconut palms, oil palms, coffee plants, and various members of the Euphorbiaceae and Solanaceae families. The disease is known for its ability to cause severe economic losses, particularly in plantations where the pathogen has been introduced by local insect populations.

Symptoms of infection are diverse but generally manifest as severe yellowing (chlorosis), wilting, and premature necrosis of the leaves. In palm trees, the disease leads to the decay of the heart, resulting in the death of the tree. Affected plants often exhibit reduced fruit production, with fruits appearing stunted, deformed, or dropping prematurely before ripening occurs.

The transmission of Phytomonas is exclusively dependent on insect vectors, primarily true bugs (Hemiptera), such as lace bugs and stink bugs. When these insects feed on plant sap, they introduce the protozoa into the vascular tissue. The development of an outbreak is closely correlated with the population dynamics of these insects, which thrive in humid and warm climates.

Management and prevention strategies focus on the control of insect vectors and the sanitation of the plantation. The application of systemic insecticides, coupled with the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic plants, is critical to stop the spread of the pathogen. Future prevention efforts emphasize the development of resistant crop varieties and strict quarantine measures to prevent the spread into unaffected regions.
