Description
Tobacco black shank is a destructive plant disease caused by the soil-borne oomycete Phytophthora nicotianae. This pathogen targets the root and crown tissues of the plant, disrupting water and nutrient uptake. Due to the formation of hardy structures called oospores, the pathogen can survive for several years in soil, making long-term management a significant challenge for growers.
While primarily affecting tobacco, Phytophthora nicotianae is known to infect a wide range of host plants, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and various ornamental species. The versatility of this pathogen means that infected greenhouse facilities or garden patches can serve as reservoirs, leading to severe economic losses in both commercial and agricultural settings.
The characteristic symptoms begin with the yellowing and drooping of lower leaves. As the infection progresses, a distinct black or dark-brown lesion develops at the stem base, often extending to the root system, which becomes dark and decayed. In advanced stages, the internal tissue of the stem shows distinct browning and necrosis, leading to rapid wilting and plant death.
Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high soil moisture and warm temperatures (ranging from 25°C to 30°C). Heavy rainfall or over-irrigation facilitates the movement of motile zoospores through the soil water, allowing them to reach healthy root systems. Soil compaction and poor drainage are primary risk factors that exacerbate the spread of the disease.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Growers should prioritize the use of resistant cultivars and ensure rigorous crop rotation schedules to break the pathogen's life cycle. Sanitization of tools, controlling water run-off, and avoiding the movement of contaminated soil are crucial. Chemical control using soil-applied fungicides may be necessary in areas with a history of black shank infection.
