The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Phytophthora pachypleura. It belongs to a group of fungus-like organisms known as water molds, which rely heavily on moisture for survival and dissemination. As an obligate pathogen, it actively invades plant tissue, disrupting the vascular system and preventing the uptake of water and essential nutrients, which leads to rapid plant decline.

This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily affecting various plant species in nursery settings and forest ecosystems. In agricultural environments, it is notorious for causing damping-off and crown rot. Phytophthora pachypleura is particularly destructive because it can remain latent in the soil for extended periods, making early detection and intervention critical for minimizing yield losses.

Clinical signs of infection often start as wilting or drooping of leaves, even when soil moisture levels are adequate. As the disease progresses, dark brown lesions appear at the base of the stem or on the root system. In advanced stages, the roots become necrotic and mushy, leading to total plant collapse. The zoospores are motile and travel through thin films of water in the soil to reach new roots. Temperatures between 18°C and 25°C are often optimal for the sporulation and infection processes, allowing the pathogen to move rapidly through a field or nursery if left unchecked.
