American phytoplasma (Phytoplasma americanum) is a significant plant pathogen classified within the class Mollicutes. These wall-less bacteria are restricted to the sieve elements of the plant phloem, where they cause profound physiological disruptions by interfering with the transport of nutrients and photoassimilates throughout the host plant's system.
The host range of this pathogen encompasses a variety of dicotyledonous crops, including solanaceous vegetables, legumes, and several ornamental species. In agriculture, infection by Phytoplasma americanum can result in devastating economic losses, significantly reducing both the quality and quantity of the harvest by causing physiological decline and metabolic stress.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by generalized yellowing (chlorosis), stunting, and abnormal vegetative growth. One of the most distinctive markers is the formation of 'witches' brooms' due to excessive lateral shoot proliferation, along with floral abnormalities like virescence (greening) and phyllody, which ultimately prevent the development of healthy fruit.
Transmission occurs primarily through insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers (Cicadellidae), which acquire the phytoplasma by ingesting sap from infected plants. Once infected, the vector serves as a persistent carrier, transmitting the pathogen to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions, thereby facilitating the rapid spread of the disease within and between fields.
