Description

Clubroot is a soil-borne disease caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae, a member of the Plasmodiophorida order. It is considered one of the most destructive diseases affecting the Brassicaceae family, as the pathogen alters the hormonal balance of the host plant, resulting in abnormal root cell division and growth.

The disease targets various cruciferous crops including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, turnips, and oilseed rape. Furthermore, numerous cruciferous weeds act as alternative hosts, ensuring the survival of the pathogen in the soil environment even when susceptible commercial crops are not present.

Symptoms initially manifest as stunted growth and wilting of leaves during the hottest parts of the day. Upon inspection of the root system, one can observe distinct galls or club-shaped swellings. In advanced stages, these galls decompose, releasing billions of resting spores back into the soil, which compromises the nutrient transport of the plant.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on soil conditions. It thrives in acidic soils (pH below 6.5), high moisture content, and moderate temperatures. Resting spores are extremely resilient and can survive in the soil for up to a decade, making the pathogen difficult to eradicate once it is established in a field.

Management of clubroot is challenging and requires an integrated approach. Essential measures include crop rotation with non-host species, soil liming to raise the pH above 7.0, and the implementation of strict hygiene practices to prevent the spread of infested soil. The use of resistant cultivars is currently the most effective method for minimizing yield losses.
