Plasmodiophoromycetes are a group of obligate intracellular parasites, often classified as slime molds, that cause significant diseases in agricultural crops. The most well-known representative is the pathogen responsible for clubroot in Brassicaceae. These organisms do not produce true mycelium, but rather exist as plasmodia within host cells, stimulating them to divide and expand abnormally.

The primary hosts of these pathogens include crops from the Brassicaceae family, such as cabbage, broccoli, oilseed rape, and turnips. The infection cycle starts when zoospores penetrate the root hairs. Once established, the pathogen hijacks the host's metabolism, forcing the root cells to multiply uncontrollably, which leads to the formation of characteristic galls and distortions.

The symptoms are highly distinctive: large, tumor-like swellings appear on the root system. As the disease progresses, the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients is severely compromised. Farmers often observe stunted growth, wilting during the hottest part of the day, and yellowing foliage, which indicates that the root structure is failing due to internal colonization by the parasite.

Development and spread are strongly influenced by the soil environment. These organisms thrive in moist, acidic soils (pH 6.0 or lower) with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. Their resting spores are remarkably resilient and can persist in the soil for over a decade, making complete eradication almost impossible once a field is contaminated with high inoculum levels.

Economic damage is substantial, often leading to total crop failure. Effective management requires an integrated strategy:

  • adjusting soil pH through liming to reach neutrality;
  • implementing long-term crop rotation schemes;
  • using certified disease-free transplants;
  • selecting resistant plant varieties and hybrids;
  • maintaining field hygiene to prevent the spread of contaminated soil.
