Description

The causal agent of celery downy mildew is the oomycete Plasmopara apii, which belongs to the group of downy mildew pathogens. This is a destructive disease that affects both leaf and celeriac varieties, leading to premature wilting and necrosis of the plant foliage, which significantly reduces the quality and marketable yield of the crops.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Apiaceae family, particularly celery (Apium graveolens). The disease can infect plants at all growth stages, starting from the seedling nursery phase through to the development of mature root systems or the lush growth of vegetative leaf clusters.

Symptoms initially appear as angular, chlorotic lesions on the upper side of the leaf blade, which eventually turn tan or brown as the tissue dies. Under conditions of high humidity, a characteristic white to grayish downy growth develops on the undersides of the leaves, consisting of sporangiophores and sporangia that are easily disseminated by wind, splashing rain, or irrigation.

The development of Plasmopara apii is strongly favored by cool, moist weather, prolonged rainfall, heavy dews, and high-density planting that restricts airflow around the plants. Optimal conditions for spore germination include free moisture on foliage and temperatures between 15°C and 22°C. The pathogen can overwinter in crop debris and soil as dormant oospores.

Management strategies for celery downy mildew include: selecting resistant cultivars, implementing strict crop rotation intervals of at least 3-4 years, and ensuring proper spacing to promote air circulation in the field or greenhouse. Effective control relies on the timely application of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments upon the first appearance of symptoms, along with rigorous sanitation of post-harvest crop residues.
