Description
Plectosporium blight is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Plectosporium tabacinum. This disease is known to cause severe damage to agricultural crops, particularly within the Cucurbitaceae family, leading to substantial economic losses for growers if not managed properly during the growing season.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and other cucurbits. The fungus can also infect various legumes and certain vegetable crops. Infection typically begins on stems and leaf petioles before spreading to the fruit, where it causes the most economically damaging symptoms.
Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of numerous small, spindle-shaped or circular spots that are white to light tan with a distinct reddish-brown margin. As the disease progresses, these lesions merge, causing the affected stems to become brittle and the fruit to develop dry, pitted lesions that are highly susceptible to secondary pathogens.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, rain, and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. The fungal spores are easily splashed by raindrops or irrigation water and can also be dispersed by wind, allowing the infection to move rapidly through a field during wet weather periods.
Management strategies focus on reducing inoculum pressure and limiting conditions favorable for disease spread. Key practices include deep plowing to bury crop residues, which helps in breaking the life cycle, and strictly rotating crops to non-host species for at least three years. When weather forecasts predict prolonged wet periods, the application of preventative fungicides containing strobilurins or triazoles is highly recommended to protect developing fruit.
