Pink mold, caused by the fungus Pocheina rosea, is a soil-inhabiting pathogen that frequently affects plants in greenhouses and storage facilities. While it typically acts as a saprotroph decomposing organic matter, it can become a significant opportunistic pathogen under controlled environment conditions.
This fungus primarily affects young seedlings, ornamental plants, and various bulb crops. In commercial horticulture, the presence of the pathogen is often associated with organic-rich substrates that have not undergone proper sterilization, making it a recurring issue in propagation stages.
The primary symptom of the disease is the emergence of a dense, powdery, pinkish-salmon fungal growth on the substrate surface or the base of the plant stem. As the fungus spreads, it can physically smother seedlings, leading to damping-off symptoms and the eventual collapse of the affected plant tissues due to infection.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Pocheina rosea. Specifically, high humidity levels exceeding 85%, stagnant air, and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C create an ideal environment for rapid mycelial colonization. The fungus spreads easily via airborne spores and contaminated irrigation water.
Management of this disease focuses on strict cultural practices to minimize humidity and maintain soil hygiene. Growers are advised to use well-drained, sterile substrates and ensure optimal ventilation. Biocontrol agents and specific fungicide applications may be necessary in severe cases to suppress the fungal population and protect sensitive crops.
