Porina adflata is a species of lichenized fungus that frequently colonizes the bark of various woody plants. In an agricultural setting, the presence of these organisms is often regarded as a sign of environmental conditions favorable to fungal growth, such as high humidity and poor ventilation within the canopy of fruit-bearing trees.

The causative agent belongs to the family Porinaceae. Its growth type is typically epiphytic, meaning it does not directly feed on the plant's sap. However, by covering the bark, it limits the gas exchange of the host plant and retains excessive moisture, which creates a perfect microenvironment for secondary pathogens, including bacteria and other parasitic fungi.

This fungus primarily affects fruit crops including apple, pear, and stone fruit trees, especially in older or neglected orchards. While it may not kill the tree directly, the long-term impact involves the degradation of bark health, which can lead to localized necrosis and an increased vulnerability to structural damage or insect pests hiding under the crusty layers.

Symptoms of infestation are identified by the formation of patches on the bark, often appearing as dark, crust-like structures. Close inspection usually reveals small, black perithecia (fruiting bodies) embedded in the substrate. The bark beneath the colony may eventually lose its elasticity and become susceptible to cracking during temperature fluctuations.

  • Implement systematic dormant pruning to improve sunlight penetration and air circulation.
  • Perform mechanical cleaning of bark to remove excessive buildup of moss and lichen.
