The family Porinaceae consists of fungi that primarily form symbiotic relationships known as lichens. While they are often observed on tree bark, they are technically epiphytes rather than virulent pathogens, though their colonization can indicate reduced tree vigor or specific environmental conditions.
These organisms are classified as Ascomycota. In an agricultural context, their presence is often viewed as a symptom of neglect. They do not feed on the tree tissues directly, but their dense growth can modify the bark's surface, creating a habitat for various pests and interfering with the tree's natural physiological processes.
Symptoms of their presence include the appearance of tiny, punctiform structures called perithecia, which are embedded within the lichen thallus on the bark. The affected areas may display a crust-like texture with varying shades of gray, white, or green, potentially covering large sections of the trunk and primary branches.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Porinaceae include prolonged high humidity, poor air circulation, and low light intensity. These conditions are typically found in neglected orchards with overcrowded trees and high levels of debris or dead bark, which provide a stable surface for spore germination.
Management strategies focus on improving tree hygiene. Effective measures include mechanical cleaning of the bark, pruning to improve sunlight penetration and air movement through the canopy, and the application of lime-based washes to the trunk. These practices significantly reduce the surface area available for colonization.
