Description
The causal agent of this plant disease is the fungus Pseudocercospora punicae. It is a significant phytopathogen that affects pomegranate trees (Punica granatum) worldwide, causing leaf spots and potential premature defoliation in commercial orchards and home gardens alike.
The disease primarily targets the foliage of the pomegranate tree. While it is most frequently observed on leaves, severe infections can also spread to young twigs and fruit surfaces. The pathogen is particularly problematic in humid, subtropical regions where rainfall is frequent during the growing season.
Initial symptoms include the appearance of small, circular to irregular brown or reddish-purple spots on the leaf surface. These spots eventually enlarge and merge, causing surrounding leaf tissues to turn yellow. Under high humidity, the underside of the leaves develops a dark, olive-colored fungal growth, which represents the sporulation of the pathogen.
