Description
Pseudovalsa necrosis is a fungal disease caused by species of the Pseudovalsa genus, which are ascomycete fungi known to affect the bark and cambium of various broad-leaved trees. This pathogen is particularly harmful to trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, wounding, or improper pruning practices, leading to localized or systemic tissue death.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include several hardwood species, with Quercus (oak) and Acer (maple) being the most susceptible. The fungus typically gains entry into the host through bark fissures, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once established, it begins to degrade the wood tissue, which severely compromises the tree's vascular system.
Visible symptoms of the infection include localized areas of bark necrosis that appear sunken and eventually crack or peel away. Within these necrotic areas, small, dark fruiting bodies (stromata) are often visible, erupting through the bark surface. As the infection progresses, affected branches will exhibit leaf chlorosis, premature senescence, and eventual dieback.
The development and spread of Pseudovalsa are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and sufficient rainfall, which facilitate the release and dispersal of spores. Wind and water splash are the primary vectors for local spread within a forest or orchard stand, especially where canopy airflow is poor.
Management of this fungal disease relies heavily on proactive sanitation measures. Pruning out infected limbs and destroying the diseased wood is essential to reduce the inoculum load. Maintaining the tree's health through adequate watering and fertilization helps the tree defend itself against infection. In some cases, applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season can help prevent the colonization of fresh pruning wounds.
