Description
Beet pseudoyellows (BPYV) is a viral disease caused by a virus belonging to the genus Crinivirus. It is characterized as a phloem-limited virus, meaning it colonizes the conductive tissues of the plant, disrupting the transport of nutrients and photosynthates throughout the organism.
The primary vector for the transmission of BPYV is the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). The virus is transmitted in a semi-persistent manner, which requires sustained feeding by the vector on the host plant to successfully initiate the infection cycle.
The disease affects a wide range of horticultural and field crops. In the context of cucurbits, it severely impacts watermelon production, often leading to significant physiological stress that reduces both fruit size and overall quality of the harvest.
Symptoms typically manifest as interveinal chlorosis, where the leaf tissue between the veins turns yellow while the veins themselves remain green. As the disease progresses, leaves become brittle, thickened, and often display an upward or downward curling, severely inhibiting the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Management strategies focus on vector control and sanitation. Producers are advised to employ robust whitefly management programs, including the use of sticky traps for early detection, biological control agents, and the application of appropriate insecticides. Eliminating host weeds that act as viral reservoirs near crop fields is also a fundamental preventive measure.
