Beet pseudoyellows is a viral disease caused by the Beet pseudoyellows virus (BPYV), a member of the genus Crinivirus within the family Closteroviridae. This plant pathogen utilizes a single-stranded RNA genome to replicate within the phloem tissues of its host plants, causing systemic infection and significant physiological disruption.
The primary hosts of BPYV include various sugar and table beet varieties, but the virus is known to affect a wide range of horticultural crops, including lettuce, spinach, and cucurbits. Symptomatology typically involves interveinal chlorosis of mature, older leaves, while younger leaves often remain asymptomatic. As the infection progresses, leaves may become thick, brittle, and necrotic at the edges.
The biological cycle of this pathogen relies entirely on the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). The transmission is semi-persistent, meaning the whitefly acquires the virus by feeding on infected phloem and can transmit it to healthy hosts for several days. There is no evidence of mechanical transmission or seed-borne spread, making the management of the insect vector the cornerstone of disease control.
Development and spread of the virus are highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor whitefly population growth. Warm, stable temperatures in both greenhouse environments and open fields provide an ideal setting for the vectors to thrive. Often, outbreaks start near sheltered areas or weeds, which act as primary reservoirs of the virus during the off-season, bridging the gap between crop rotations.
Economic damage caused by Beet pseudoyellows is characterized by reduced root yield and impaired sugar accumulation in beets. Because the virus weakens the host, infected plants become increasingly susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors. To manage this disease, growers should focus on:
