Description
Psilachnum is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Ascomycetes. While predominantly known for their saprotrophic lifestyle on decaying plant material, certain species can behave as opportunistic pathogens, particularly affecting weakened crops or vegetation under environmental stress. The infection typically results in localized necrotic lesions on plant stems and tissues.
This pathogen primarily targets a wide range of herbaceous plants and cereal crop residues. It is commonly found in fields where crop residues are not properly managed, as the fungus utilizes these materials as a substrate for survival and subsequent propagation during the following growing seasons.
The visual symptoms of Psilachnum infection include the formation of small, cup-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies), which are typically white, cream, or pale yellow in color, appearing on the affected plant surface. Infected tissues eventually become dark and brittle, which may lead to systemic weakness of the stalk or stem.
Environmental conditions conducive to the spread of this fungus include persistent high humidity and moderate temperatures. Dense crop canopies that limit air circulation are particularly susceptible, as they trap moisture and prevent the drying of leaf sheaths and stalks, thereby creating an ideal microclimate for the pathogen.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. Proper field sanitation, such as incorporating crop residues into the soil, and ensuring adequate crop rotation are the primary lines of defense. Avoiding high plant density helps improve ventilation and reduce the risk of humidity-related fungal development.
