Psilolechia is a genus of crustose lichens that are frequently confused with parasitic fungi or plant diseases in horticultural settings. In agricultural biology, it is essential to distinguish between actual phytopathogens that damage plant tissues and epiphytes like Psilolechia, which merely use the bark as a substrate for growth without causing infection.

The causative agent concept does not apply here in the traditional sense, as these organisms do not possess the ability to invade or parasitize host plants. Instead, they derive their nutrition from atmospheric sources, moisture, and minerals collected from dust or rain, maintaining a harmless symbiotic relationship with the trees they inhabit.

These lichens typically colonize perennial crops and deciduous trees, especially those with rough, aged bark. The development of Psilolechia is closely linked to environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, low sunlight exposure, and poor ventilation within the orchard canopy. These conditions are common in unpruned or neglected gardens where moisture remains on the bark surface for extended periods.

Symptoms often appear as small, dusty-looking crusts of varying colors, ranging from dull gray to greenish or yellowish hues. Unlike fungal infections that cause necrotic spots, rot, or wilting, the presence of Psilolechia is purely superficial. It does not penetrate the cambium or cause metabolic disruption to the host tree, making it an ecological inhabitant rather than a threat.

Effective management and prevention strategies are focused on general tree health rather than disease control. Pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration is the most effective way to limit lichen growth. In cases where the aesthetic appearance is undesirable or for orchard hygiene, mechanical cleaning of the bark or the application of copper or iron-based solutions can effectively remove or prevent the re-establishment of these lichen colonies.
